MUST be shipped with LTL-Freight Service. Also and this is something that gets missed depending on the tire shop, to mechanically balance those front tires by spin balancing and using stick on wheel weights is highly recommended.IMPORTANT: This item is oversized. No different then gravel haulers pounding down a lot of gravel to deliver loads on county and oil field/forestry roads.ĭefinitely if the old tires are wearing funny its time to get a proper front end inspection to go through the king pins if required, pull the hubs to inspect the bearings, tie rods for wear, spring bushings etc and a good alignment with any caster corrections and just replace the front shocks at that time before installing new tires. I haven't been looking at what tire design crude oil haulers or say log haulers run but some go on lots of gravel and they run that same 24.5 11R tire, lots of oil field type jobs use trucks with that same size steer tire used over the highway. Just to be clear again about the situation I saw with the Firestone tires ( and am sure some other true highway only tires would have the same issue ), it wasn't a wear issue as they were almost new tires, it was an area of imbedded rock jammed deep into those narrow grooves within the face of the tire ( yes rocks were also stuck permanently in the shoulder groove ) and was affecting the tires shape. Having a blow out on a steer tire isn't something one wants and some of these steer tires are truly made for 100% paved roads. That is only my opinion of course but when I saw that as I was shopping around for steer tires I decided to get the XZE2 instead and so far are happy with them but I don't have that many km on them for any long term experience. Might be different where your at but worth the call to save a few dollars.Īs per the Firestone tire, I honestly would not say to use those on gravel for the reason that a neighbour has a set and they are horrible for rocks sticking in those narrow grooves and NOT coming out at all even at highway speed and I saw what I felt was the beginnings of stone drilling or potentially so with a deformed area of tread where some rocks were imbedded into the tread in a groove causing the tire surface to dish in. Another tire store had a pile of the Firestone tire and yes they were cheaper, same theme as takeoffs from new trucks. So Kal tire had a pile of those in takeoffs a couple of years ago when I bought a set and while still expensive even as a takeoff it was less then a new tire and it looked like it had never seen a road ( probably was on an axle that never touched the ground as it was transported up here ).

Oddly enough some highway tractors get shipped from the factory with tires like that all the way around and at least here in the Peace Country there are no customers who are going to run a tire like that in the oil patch on drive axles !. If you are looking at the XZE2 for one example, try calling around for a dealer that has those in a takeoff from brand new trucks.
